Hard Truth One: We Must Serve the King

If we claim to be Christian, we claim Jesus as our king. "Jesus is Lord" we say, but do we understand that in that claim, we forgo our individual freedom and agree to serve our King Jesus, not for our own benefit, but for the benefit of His kingdom? When we claim Jesus as our king, we agree to His laws and that His punishment is warranted and justified when we break His laws.

Our King says:

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21)

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

So what are these commandments that Jesus is speaking of? There 613 (give or take) commandments in the Old Testament referred to as "the Law". Many of these commands were given to the nation of Israel to make them a holy people as we described above. Others, like the 10 commandments are clearly meant for all people at all times. Great care must be taken to discern which laws were meant for the nation of Israel and those meant for all man. To be clear though, all 613 laws need to be considered in view of how Jesus came to "fulfill them"

An obvious example are the "laws" regarding the Jewish Passover celebration. When Jesus became the "sacrificial lamb", he fulfilled those laws and Christians have no need to sacrifice animals on alters. The same for the "laws" regarding atonement. When Jesus died for our sins, the need to "atone" annually for our sins through those rituals was nullified, because forgiveness through grace by faith fulfilled those laws

Jesus further explained this when he said

The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. (Luke 16:16)

Rather than discuss all 613 Old Testament laws, let's look first at what God said to the Israelites and how Jesus paraphrased the law. The first commandment God gave to Israel is:

You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3)

God further commanded Israel:

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:5)

As Jesus fulfilled the law, He expounded

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
